Allestree Theatre Group

New members in any capacity, not just acting, are always welcome in our group whether they have experience or just enthusiasm.

The run up to our spring production at the end of April, and our autumn production at the end of October, sees the group meeting in St Nicholas’ Church Hall on Monday evenings from 7:30 and the actors rehearsing Friday evenings as well.

We also hold play reading evenings just for enjoyment throughout the year as well as an evening of entertainment for members and families in the summer. This year it was a Murder Mystery evening. We also have various social events for our members and families

So if you are over 16, want to make new friends, or just fill a Monday and or Friday evening, and you like the look of the job descriptions below, then contact us via email or phone James on -

Director
The individual who suffers from the delusion that he or she is responsible for every moment of brilliance cited by the critic in the local review

Stage Manager
Responsible for overseeing the crew, supervising the set changes, baby-sitting the actors and putting the director in a hammerlock to keep him from killing the actor who just decided to turn his walk-on part into a major role by doing magic tricks while he serves the tea.

Sound
Individuals who, from the only vantage point offering a full view of the stage, give the director a heart attack by giving a scene-by-scene review of everything that's going wrong

Lighting

Prevents the production being just a radio show

Stage Crew / Set Builders
Group of unsung heroes who after building the set spend their evenings coping with 50-minute stretches of total boredom interspersed with 30-second bursts of mindless panic, but know one end of a screwdriver from another and can build a set from anything.

Set Designer

Sets up an obstacle course which, throughout the rehearsal period, defies the laws of physics by growing smaller week by week while continuing to occupy the same amount of space

Actors

(As defined by a set designer) People who stand between the audience and the set designer's art, blocking the view. That's also the origin of the word "blocking," by the way.

Prompt

Mild mannered and patient, never seen, rumoured to like dark corners, but has a whisper that can be heard at 100 paces.

Props

A team of people who have the ability to find or make anything from nothing and make it appear before anyone realises it’s needed.

Front of House

Consists of members who are just happy to help on performance nights, selling tickets, refreshments and programmes and helping the audience enjoy the experience of live theatre.

Refreshments

The most important members of the ATG. These people make sure everybody has tea and biscuits during rehearsals and for the audience in the interval on play nights.
